ContainR

2010

ContainR is a street installation at the nexus of video, public art and urban design, sitting at the crossroads of mountain and urban culture, art and sports cinema, embracing public art and sustainable design. By using reconditioned shipping containers and integrating alternative energy sources, the installation references Vancouver’s rich history as a major port as well as a centre for green design. Think of it as green cinema meets performance films. The recycled shipping containers housed free screenings of Canadian and International dance, sport and performance films.

+++

ContainR was sited at Vancouver’s SHAW Tower court yard, across from the Olympic Cauldron during the 2010 Olympics from February 12 – 28. ContainR featured 48 films from around the world, including 5 commissioned films made specifically for ContainR and broadcast on Bravo!FACT / CTV. Commissioned filmmakers were: Murray Siple; Miryam Bouchard; Kathleen Smith; Mark Adam; and Marlene Millar and Philip Szporer.

Collaborators

The project was curated by Nicole Mion & Evann Siebens. The containers were designed by architect Robert Duke, artist & industrial designer Keith Doyle and builder / designer Iain Sinclair. It features murals by Vancouver artists the dark and Zak David (aka Virus).
